Happiness for a day or two ….

I know, that’s from a song Macy Gray once wrote. But I’d like to use her lyrics to head todays notes about the rare state of happiness. I guess, we are all too easily tempted to overlook that happiness actually does occur.
Did you ever as kids use marmalade glasses to catch interesting looking or beautiful insects? Just to have the pleasure of watching that rare object of beauty or your current fancy for that little while longer? I used to go for blue/green shimmering beetles. If I could’nt find any of those, I would settle for any beetles that featured varying tones of colour. I used to spent hours admiring the shades of their bodies. I thought it fascinating how beautiful even odd creatures could be and enjoyed the pleasure of watching their appearences, bustling to and fro in their see-through cage. As it happened – we really only were ignorant kids then – the creatures of beauty died after a more or less short while. Nevertheless, I remember the fact that I truly felt privileged to have found a way to conserve my personal bliss for as long as I could manage.
Today, I was wishing for just that again: a marmalade glass to conserve for just a little longer a couple of hours of pure happiness. Experience has it, that we all too easily are ready to forget the good things happening to us, as is the case with pain endured. Forgetting the pain I can appreciate. But I crave for a way to bring back to memory the great moments of life more often. I know, both functions have the same psychological mechanics underlying, but still: if only we could somehow manage to preserve the good moments we experience! The smell, the taste, the feel and the emotions adhered to them.
So I demand for myself the capacity to recall in as vivid detail as possible the wonderful things small and great passing and influencing my existance on this planet. Guess, I’ll have to gear up my memory for that, won’t I? Do you remember how it feels wanting to purr like a cat? When your body has a sensation of flexibility as if your spine had been miraculously and painlessly removed? When you feel warm and save and trusty and nothing and no one can in any way harm you just then? If you do, please gear up your memory, too. It shall stay with us for as long as we live.
