Ever since the year 2000 I drive towards the north of Berlin-Frohnau to get to work. A red and white landmark right next to where I work is gone since 01:09 pm today: the Funkturm Berlin-Frohnau. Whenever I drove back to Berlin from further north, lets say Hamburg, its blinking red lights would tell me: you’re home soon. Being the second highest structure in the city, at some 358 m only a few meters shorter than the tower on Berlin Alexanderplatz, it was – although out of use since a long time already – an integrated part of my daily surroundings. A few years ago, young entrepreneurs planned to use it as a bungee jumping base, but the tower was strapped down by steel ropes arranged like a tend around it to prevent it from swaying and falling in strong winds. So it was of no use to the bungee jumpers, unless they planned on being sliced on their way down.
I saw the tower come down today, the sound of the blast arriving moments after it had collapsed almost straight and neat. We shall get used to an unmarred view of the countryside, but nevertheless… I couldn’t help feeling a little sad, looking out of my office window into skies only.
