My friend has taken the blow in style. As she was told today, that her performance was not justifying the cost and was asked to either work for less money or leave, she displayed a very professional performance during the course of the day. I know her very livelyhood is threatened by today’s news. Yet, she did her job all day long and did it well, once again. And I did see the tears, shed in a hidden corner and in private. The devastation that is caused by doing your utmost and still be considered being not up to scratch. I was ready to take over today to let her go and get to terms with the news. But she refused and just got on with the business at hand. Part of that might be caused by the fact that this is the only way she could cope. Being busy. However, I am awed by her toughness. Won’t help her right now, as she will be sleepless, heartbroken, disappointed, enraged, scared. I wish I could take some of that load off her, but I can’t, as things are.
In one thing she is absolutely right: they don’t want the music that comes with a job thoroughly done. I know – as she does – that they can’t afford to pay the musicians, but nevertheless…
Worst thing is: they is me, too. Although I did put up a fight. Since I would rather have one or two staff with her work ethics than the young (and also cheaper) crop, that goes about their duties so very care- and thoughtless. Just for the quality of service provided to those who pay our ways…
As for me: I do want the music. As much as I hope our personal friendship will survive what has happened today.
