“Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.” Don’t we all know Murphy’s law? Today, it was Murphy’s hayday. Arriving at the office, there is a group of eight Scandinavian people, who insist, they booked, whereas there was not a single starting slot to be had. As we ran a big competition, had another rather biggish group of guests requiring all our hire gear, the second course booked solid and three different group tuitions in the school, apart from the regular scedule. Their driver insisted, he could not pick them up at the appointed time, a big discussion started. And just forget about all those remarks about the improbability of Murphy’s law, the pessimistic view, selective apperception and illusory correlation: around lunchtime, the phone system breaks down, followed by a power cut of some lenght. As we were trying to find ANY technician – hopeless task on a bank holiday like today – we ended up flicking every switch there is and rattling on every cord and connection in the complex. All the while people buzzing around and not one single computer working. At least the otherwise constantly ringing phone was quiet for a change. In the end, we managed to get the reception and backoffice computers running again, a mobile phoneline was organised, the number published on our website, all was hunkydory and bob’s your uncle. All those who wished to play were somehow squeezed in, don’t ask me how. And those competing got their results as per usual within minutes after closing. Oh boy, the girls were great today and most of our clientele didn’t notice anything. As half of our powerlines are still dead, I hope for a one day break on further technical problems. Murphy had his day today. Come Monday, the wiring experts shall take over…
