Alfred Hdrlicka died. Another great loss. His monumental style in sculpturing is unmatched. Two of his works will always stay present in my mind: the gravestone he made for his wife, a manifesto of the joys and pains of love and death. And, of course, the monument against war and facism in front of the Albertina in Vienna, rubbing Austria’s public nose in their guilt. I do recall with shame the havoc caused when this work of art was first revealed. If you happen to visit Vienna, please make sure to look up this site, located between the opera house and the Albertina museum.
On a more personal note, he is the last one of outstanding artist from home who I was lucky enough to have seen and listened to in person. I feel as if yet another umbilical cord to my home country has been cut off.
