An evening spoiled. One entire week of anticipation and then I pick a fight. Why did I do that? Suppose it had to happen at one point. There always is a first. After some consideration I understand now why I said what I said. Which of course had not that much to do with the topic at hand. But as this things tend to go, upon a provocative remark of mine an upsetting reply followed promptly, I said something hurtful and unfair in return and off we went. We managed to quieten things down fairly quick. Even with a little joke about the fact that we finally made it to our first dispute. But did we make it through that dispute is what I ask myself. As for me, a considerate amount of damage was done and I can’t say I feel we’ve solved anything. Two things I regret: for one I stupidly said something, and poorly so, about a situation that neither he nor I can help all that much. Not with talk. And in no way with a heated exchange of arguments. And secondly I said something stupid. On cue and enraged, I blew something completely out of proportion into utter insult. Unerringly, a mark was hit, with forseeable consequences. If only I could just unsay it. As this is impossible, all I can do now is hope it won’t be held against me for too long.
