If anyone thought, the greatest sporting event of 2010 has just ended, that one is very mistaken. It is just about to start: The Open Championship starts today and will run through to Sunday. It is the most important of the four grand slam golf competitions and the only one held in Europe. Hence also called The British Open. But simply The Open will do, too. And this year it is a special treat, since The Open returned to the origin of golf itself: St. Andrews. The finest players in the world will compete on almost holy ground. The Old Course. St. Andrews is an old town in Scotland, sitting on the eastern shore north of the Firth of Forth. Apart from being known as the home of golf all over the world, it is also famous for having the oldest university in Scotland. As I have been there several times, I have to say it features also one of the most beautiful graveyards I have ever seen. But this week all eyes will focus on what happens on The Beast, as some grand golfers also call The Old Course.

thx. sophisticated is a bit much. after all, it is but what Scotts call “a wee toon”. But pretty, very pretty. And just down the road in Anstruther I fetched the best salmon I ever tasted right off a fisherboat in the early morning. What a breakfeast!
