Sunday matinée

An interesting concept: to think of the human world as Ludwig Wittgenstein did. His Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus postulates:

The world is everything that is the case.

What is the case, the fact, is the existence of atomic facts.

The logical picture of the facts is the thought.
4
The thought is the significant proposition.
5
Propositions are truth-functions of elementary propositions.
(An elementary proposition is a truth-function of itself.)
6
The general form of truth-function is (a mathematical funktion).
This is the general form of proposition.
7
Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.

There is some nonsense in this, of course, but I personally like two main points:
– that thoughts are our logical pictures of what is given (facts). Following that suggestion, what we do not think and in consequence speak about, doesn’t really exist. For the subject in question, anyways. That is funny, considering everyone jabbering on about the world getting more “global”. If you ask me, it seems to shrink…
– that whereof one cannot speak, thereof silence must be observed. Ha, I acknowledge that. But isn’t that exactly the area, every artist strives to minimize? Keep on breaking the silence! Words are but islands in the sea of the inexpressible.
