hollow hallow souls

Most everyone is into Halloween these days. Forgetting about All Hallows and All Souls Day, if one is catholic or else Reformation Day, if one happens to be protestant. All of these religious holidays happen to coincide either yesterday, today or tomorrow. Now, I personally don’t give a toss about either of them, hence the cartoon posted below, taken from Gary Larson, The far side gallery. But what bugs me is, why in Berlin and adjoining areas as well as everywhere else I look, Halloween is so present. It can not be the influence of the Adams Family, can it? How did this happen? I have some understanding for people sticking with somewhat weird traditions, because they either believe in what they are doing or else because it was the custom from generations down. But this is a tad to hollow for my liking. Surely Halloween was introduced to Europe quite recently via TV and maybe shopowners suggestions. Why is all and sundry following customs so unfamiliar? How long until Christmas is going to happen on Dec. 25th? I’m puzzled.
