Thanks to koskator I happened upon a Russian painter unknown to me: Walentin Alexandrowitsch Serow. He apparently was a great portrait painter and his Girl with Peaches, depicting Vera Sawishna Mamontova, is well-known. After looking at lots of his work this week, I came to the conclusion that he has a way of showing female beauty, that I like a lot. Never gaping but tender and respectful.
I also like his depictions of rural life. And his landscapes.
But this seems to be his best known picture: young Maxim Gorki.
And here is the man himself: Walentin Alexandrowitsch Serow
