I do recall times, when yesterday’s newspapers were used as toilet paper. Or to polish windows. Both odd ways to recycle, I thought. Or else, old papers were stuffed in window frames to block out the draft. My granddad told me, they used old papers in their boots to cover the holes walked into them on their long, cold retreat from Russia. Not that there was any point in marching to Russia in the first place. Nowadays, the papers are simply piled and discarded in the waste paper bin. Or, if you are Mieke Meijer, made into Newspaperwood. When a Newspaperwood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore looks like real wood, too. The material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood. In 2011 the first prototypes have been presented in Milan of which a selection will be included in the Vij5 collection. Good idea, this is. I just wonder, can you spill your coffee over it without ruining such furniture for ever?

Geil! Ich hab auf der imm einen Chinesen getroffen, der machte Platten aus pappwaben. So stabil, das ich mich draufstellen konnte!

ja, sowas ähnliches hab ich auch schon mal gesehen. eine bekannte hatte regale aus pappe, zwei lagen für ein “brett”, dazwischen in falten gelegte pappe, so im zickzack. das war stabil genug für bücher + dekokram
