I remember riding on a boat on Neusiedlersee as they pointed out the markers of where the Iron Curtain had crossed the lake. I watched the birds over head flying obliviouslly back and forth across that ridiculous border and was deeply struck by the thought that they had always done this. They had no idea that their “masters” had designated some of them “communist birds” and the others “free birds” and that they were supposed to stay on their own sides.
With the craziness of the world, though, I still have to ask: that sign is a joke, isn’t it? (Please say yes.)

I have no idea, sorry. But it must be, who would put such a thing up in earnest?
