Visit Berlin and see the gardens of the world!
Sounds weird, but is true. That is exactly, what sweetheart, a friend and I were up to today. Far in the Eastern part of Berlin, in Marzahn-Hellersdorf – otherwise known as one of the uglier parts of town due to miles and miles of boxed housing in “Plattenbau” (concrete slab houses left over from GDR) – exists a big, public park called “Gärten der Welt” (gardens of the world). Accessible via cable car, because the park also features a “mountain” made from excess material excavated while building all these ugly houses. However, the hill does reach 118 m above sea level, which is quite something, given otherwise flat Berlin. The view was fabulous, I have to admit. Althoug the weather was cold and windy today, it was still a treat to look at the city from such an elevated point.
But even better were the actual gardens. There was a Japanese Garden, I liked a lot.
To warm up, we went inside to see the Bali Garden. It was very humid inside and smelled of jungle. I liked the vivid colours and the playfullness of it all.
Very different, but also beautiful was the Korean Garden. It was tranquil and peaceful. I think, I preferre it even over the Japanese Zen Garden. The entire garden, including buildings, art and plants, are a gift from Seoul to the City of Berlin. Thank you, Seoul, I like your present a lot.
And then, of course, there were our “run-of-the-mill” English Gardens, Tulip Fields, Rose Gardens, European parklands, wide grassland and lots of water around. Just great at every turn. So, if you are interested in gardens at all, go visit.
I had to be patient for all the pictures to load, but it was worth the wait – gorgeous!! You will have to take me there next visit.
