This week my favourite artist of all time: Mr. Egon Schiele.
He came to mind this morning, because another pandemic virus ended his genius life in 1918: the Spanish Flu. He became only 28. Egon Schiele was – along with Oscar Kokoschka and Gustv Klimt – a main artist of the Viennese Modernism at the early 20th century, leading into expressionism.
I adore his work since almost childhood. Not so much the – often raw and explicit – nudes, he is mostly known for. But the more descriptive land- and seascapes, portraits and self-portraits.
Apart from the sheer mastery of form and colour – noone else is able to depict emotions better than Mr. Schiele, in my humble opinion. Just imagine, what an oevre he could have created, had he ever gotten a chance to grow old.

I don’t think you ever told me that Schiele was your “favorite artist of all time”. I love the landscape stuff, but his portraits (the nude ones) always seem painful to me. Though, I agree with Joan about the man surrounded by books.

I agee wit hthe nudes – they are very twisted, to say the least. But one has to keep in mind: the guy never got any older than 28. Which man (or human) has a truly untwisted view of sexuality at such a youg age?

An awesome sampling of Schiele’s work. I love the bold colors and brush strokes, the squiggly “movement” of the water. My faves were the self-portrait and the man who is surrounded by books. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
