revelation

Came to really listen to the lyrics to a song I know and like for a very long time just recently. You know how songs sometimes evoke emotions and/or memories. Somehow, there is a direct link from a particular music, melody or voice to an event in your life. Works like smells. You hear the tune and bam, you’re instantly back in the circumstances and time when the link was first established. So it was with me and Edwyn Collins’ one hit wonder Girl like you. My husband played it to me when he first fell in love with me some 20 years ago. Maybe for the first time I listened to all the words sung this morning. Quite a revelation. I should have listened to the lyrics way back when. But it turned out as per usual. Self-serving bias occurring. All I ever heard, was “I’ve never met a girl like you before / You give me just a taste so I want more and more”
Unnoticed so far, the song goes on: “You’ve made me acknowledge the devil in me / I hope to God I’m talkin’ metaphorically / Hope that I’m talkin’ allegorically” On hindsight it seems as if this song is a prophecy. Coming true word by word. Sadly enough, all hopes for metaphors and allegory were in vain. “Now my hands are bleeding and my knees are raw / Now you’ve got me crawlin’, crawlin’ on the floor”
